Chico Preview Day 2013 - Demonstration Part

Every semester at CSU, Chico each department in the college has a group of their students give tours of facilities and share information to prospective students to the school in general and some that are looking for which major will suit them best. In sustainable manufacturing we like to give a demonstration of the machines students get to use during courses, it makes for a great display of the abilities that we have. Prospective students get to come through and watch the machining process while getting to press some of the buttons and also getting a souvenir part when it is all said and done.

This year we made a widget that does nothing more than show the different machining processes while looking cool. We started by turning a rod of aluminum on our HAAS ST10 CNC lathe to get the general profile of the part. For the second operation we bolted the blank in a fixture on our four axis HAAS VF3. The part took just over 7 minutes to complete and has lathe profiling, boring, drilling and parting followed by fourth axis positioning, mill turning, rigid tapping and chamfering.
